How to Customize Your LinkedIn URL

How to Customize Your LinkedIn internetadresseHow to Customize Your LinkedIn URLIt is extremely important that you customize your URL when using LinkedIn. It could mean the difference between getting found or getting ignored. Why is customizing a LinkedIn URL so important? We explain in this quick helpful post for job seekers using LinkedIn.Why you need to customize your URL on LinkedInConsider the following reasons for customizing your LinkedIn URL1. LinkedIn gives you a scrambled URL after you create a profileThe URL LinkedIn gives you usually looks something like thishttps//www.linkedin.com/in/my-personenname-04756b96/If you have a commonly used name that can be found all over LinkedIns 500 million profiles, you had better do something in your URL to tell others they have found the right person.2. No one can remember a URL that ends in a0394fh89If your LinkedIn URL is difficult to remember, it makes finding you much more difficult. Try using a URL that looks like it contains Linked In and your name only.If someone goes to look for you on LinkedIn by typing in your name after the linkedin.com/in/ URL, it is much easier to do if it is just your name.3. Hey...It just looks betterSeriously, would you rather have this URLhttps//www.linkedin.com/in/stevenlowell/Or would you rather have a LinkedIn URL ending in a bunch of numbers? It looks better to have only your name, plus it tells others that you pay attention to details of your social media footprint. Here is how to customize your LinkedIn URL1. Go to your LinkedIn profile page, the one that shows your LinkedIn URL in the browser.2. Next, go to the top right of your LinkedIn profile and look for the Edit Public Profile URL section. It is right underneath the Me section. See below3. Click the Edit public profile URL section, which opens up a new page. On the new page, the upper right section will provide an vorkaufsrecht to change your URL. You will have to click on the small blue pencil to start. See below4. Aft er you click the blue pencil, an option will open up that will allow you to rewrite the LinkedIn URL. See below5. After you rewrite the URL, click save and your LinkedIn URL is changed The new link is much more user-friendly for those trying to find you.Heres a tip about changing the LinkedIn URLYou will find that some URLs are no longer available on LinkedIn. This is usually when someone has the same name as you, but they were quicker to snag your LinkedIn URL. If this happens, contact the person with that LinkedIn profile URL. See if they are willing to change it.If they say no, try a LinkedIn URL that includes a middle name, initial or add one simple number to it on the end.Using me as an exampleThere are two Steven Lowell profiles on LinkedIn. One is for a public speaker and the other is me.I had connected with the other profile and worked out in messaging who would use what LinkedIn URL. At the same time, I discovered someone quite interesting to network with and that is never a bad thinghttps//www.linkedin.com/in/stevenlowell/https//www.linkedin.com/in/stevelowell/Do you see the difference? Customize your URL on LinkedIn and simply having another persons name may work in your favor

4 Metrics Recruiters Love to See on Resumes

4 Metrics Recruiters Love to See on Resumes4 Metrics Recruiters Love to See on Resumes If you want to make sure your resume catches a recruiters eye, there are few better ways to do so than by adding metrics to it. Why?For one, we know that the human eye processes numbers faster than words, career expert J.T. ODonnell said in an interview with Glassdoor . But beyond that, they also help me as a recruiter give context to the size and scope of the work that you did, ODonnell explains. In any given workday, though, theres no shortage of specific numbers you could call out the amount of emails you send, the amount of meetings you attend, the amount of projects you work on. So how do you know which metrics to include? We use the following four-step framework in our Job Seekers Toolkit to help you decide which numbers pack the most punch. Once you add the right metrics throughout your resume, dont be surprised if the interview offers start rolling inWhen deciding which me trics to include, its important to think about the key performance indicators, or KPIs, for your role. For example, salespeople are often assessed on how much revenue they drive, how many new clients they bring in, how many of their customers renew, etc. Whatever your role, think about the numbers that matter most for you perhaps theyre ones that your boss brings up in weekly meetings, that you find in your performance review, or even that you binnensee in the LinkedIn profiles of people with the same job title as you.Of these different metrics, think about which ones represent ways you added to the company and helped it grow. Depending on your role, this might includeIn many cases, what you help your company reduce or eliminate can be just as important as what you add to it. In fact, certain roles focus their energy entirely on helping companies save or reduce in order to operate more efficiently. Think about whether you have a concrete way to measure how youve helped your compan y save or reduce the followingA great way to illustrate how much value you can add to a company is by showing them how many people youve previously helped. This doesnt just have to be people outside of your company like users or clients it can also include those within your company. Look through the following people metrics, and think about which ones might be relevant to your roleUnderstanding how frequently you performed certain tasks goes a long way in helping recruiters and hiring managers reading your resume understand how well-versed you are in a given area - often, the only difference between being a novice and being an expert is how much time you spend practicing. To help you figure out which tasks are the most important to highlight, take a look in the job description to see which key responsibilities and skills are listed. For example, a job seeker applying to a position that lists analytical skills as a requirement might want to describe how they pulled weekly site traf fic reports using Google Analytics, while someone applying to a PR position that mentions media relations skills in the job description may want to describe how they pitched reporters on a daily basis. If youre not used to adding numbers to your resume , it may feel a little bit strange at first. But dont worry - youll get the hang of it in due time. Best of all, theres a real chance it will improve your odds in a job search.Numbers make a huge difference. If you can quantify what you did in any way, you should, ODonnell said.

4 ways helping a friend with their resume can benefit your resume

4 ways helping a friend with their resume can benefit your resume4 ways helping a friend with their resume can benefit your resumeIf your pal or co-worker is looking for some help revising or updating their resume, the benefits could be more than just helping them polish their resume. By getting your creative juices flowing, your proofreading skills sharpened and getting your head back in a job-circuit mentality, you may become inspired to re-craft or update your own resume. Here, experts share why its not only nice to help a friend but why it may help boost your own resume success. You remember your own accoladesWhen helping a friend build and improve their resume, you may be inspired to improve your own resume. It always inspires me to improve my own resume because it makes me think of experiences I had not highlighted in the past, and it helps me remember programming or events I had not considered putting in my resume but are absolutely beneficial, says Jen Fry, a resume expert. You c an reframe your own experiencesIf youve worked in a particular sector for a long time, your resume may have tunnel vision.By reviewing a friends resume, particularly a friend who works in a different field, you can see how other people prioritize and talk about their skills, says career coach Meg Duffy.Your resume can get a structure re-bootHelping friends in their job search is always a great way to develop your job-seeking skills since you can get their perspective and see how they go about it, while also engaging in discussions when you provide them with advice, says Valerie Streif, with Pramp, a mock einstellungsgesprch platform for job seeking developers, software engineers, data scientists, and product managers . When you see how someone else formats and structures their resume, you can get an idea of how to improve your own.It can open your eyes to different keywords you could be using, formatting styles, or make you realize you have a lot of extra content on your resume that doesnt need to be there, says Streif.Your benefits can go beyond a resumeThrough brainstorming resumes with a friend, it can spawn peer-to-peer interview practice which is also an excellent way to boost skills, says Streif.Because working with another person is going to give you a chance to see their strengths and weaknesses, and their feedback on your performance gives you an idea what you need to work on before your real interview interaction, Streif continues. Sometimes, we dont realize the little body language signals we give off to the interviewer, so having a chance to check this is valuable.I hope this is helpful, please let me know if you have any further questions.

And we make jobs are our business. So for the graduating class of 2018, who better to ask the dos and donts of the interviewing process?According to Emily and Natalie here are 8 common mistakes you should avoid1. Not writing a thank you noteOr not proofreading a thank you note. This is a chance to show off your writin g skills, so a typo in a follow-up letter is most definitely a red flag. Its important to thank the interviewer for their time. Hiring managers want to move forward with candidates who leave a positive impression and have good manners2. A lot of applicants dont realize that they should ask questions.3. Not blocking your social mediaMost companies are checking Instagram, Facebook, Google searches, IMDB, and more. You shouldnt have anything (public) on the internet that you wouldnt want HR at a company to see before even meeting you. First impressions cannot be taken back and its important to remember that companies are concerned with their own reputation, and want to bring people into their companies that are aware of their presence.4. Dont lie on your resumeIf you didnt receive a college degree, do n ot put that you graduated Fact check your GPA. Triple check your dates of employment. Candidates will lose offers at the end of an interview process if a hintergrund check exposes falsifications on the resume or application. Honesty is the best policy here, always.5. EverBeing on time means being 10 minutes early. You need to allot time for parking problems, traffic, and any to other unforeseen circumstances. There is no excuse to be late to an interview because it shows a lack of foresight and consideration that you will likewise bring to the position.7. Leave the coffee in the carDont bring a beverage to the meeting ( its too casual), dont chew gum, dont have your cell phone out or on, and make sure you arent wearing a lot of cologne or perfume.8. Dont forget to do your researchDo your homework on the company you are interviewing for That goes for the person you are interviewing with as well. This article was originally published on CreateandCultivate.com.

Career Paths for Computer Science Majors

Career Paths for Computer Science MajorsCareer Paths for Computer Science MajorsComputer science is the study of computers and how they are used to solve problems. A computer science major learns about designing computers and systems,??developing software applications and programming languages. With an extremely positive job outlook- the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts faster than average job growth through 2020 for occupations for which this major prepares people- chances of finding a job after graduation is pretty good. Degree Options Studying computer science as an undergraduate student at a four-year college will result in earning a bachelors of arts (BA) or bachelors of science (BS) degree. The coursework required to earn a BS is heavily weighted in math and science. A student enrolled in a BA program has a larger variety of classes in liberal arts and humanities. The question Which is better a BS or a BA in Computer Science? is heavily debated online. Some say that a BS is more marketable because of the concentration on math and science. Others argue that a BA is better because an individual with this degree has a more well-rounded background. There are those who believe that if you are not great at math and science, you should opt for the BA over the BS degree because you run the risk of classes in those subjects bringing down your GPA. Do your research and then decide which program is best for you. Earning a masters of science (MS) will allow an individual to demonstrate a depth of knowledge that goes beyond an undergraduate degree. While these programs often accept applicants who havent earned a BS or BA in computer science, many do have prerequisites in this subject and math. One can also earn a doctorate which will allow him or her to teach in a university or college. Most community and junior colleges that have a computer science major bill them as transfer programs. They prepare students who earn AS or AA degrees to transfer to four-year institutions where they can continue their coursework and ultimately earn a BA or BS. Because the classes are parallel to those taken in the first two years of a bachelor-level program, once the student is enrolled in a four-year program it will only take him or her two more years to graduate. Some schools offer an applied associate of science degree (AAS) program. These programs claim to prepare students for careers in computer science, but according to many sources, there are fewer jobs for those with an associate degree than there are for those who have a bachelors degree. Salaries are also significantly lower. A List of Major Courses You Can Expect to Take Computers An IntroductionComputer ProgrammingDigital SystemsDiscrete StructuresInternet and MultimediaComputer Organization and Assembly LanguageSoftware EngineeringComputing, Ethics, and SocietyAlgorithms and Data StructuresComputer Operating Systems Career Options With Your Degree Associate Degree Comput er rckendeckung Specialist, Computer Technician, Web MasterBachelors Degree Computer Support Specialist, Computer Programmer, Software Developer, Web Developer, Computer Systems AnalystMasters Degree Advanced positions in any of the above occupationsDoctoral Degree Professor Typical Work Settings Individuals who work in the computer science field are employed directly by companies and organizations or by consulting firms. Computer science professionals who work directly for companies or organizations are members- sometimes the only member- of their computer departments. Consultants typically spend time in the offices of different entities tending to their computing needs. Some are self-employed. How High School Students Can Prepare for This Major High schools students who are planning to study computer science in college should fill their schedules with math classes and any computer science electives their schools have to offer. What Else You Need to Know In the technolo gy field, the experience is as important as a degree. Getting as much experience as you can while you are in school will make you more employable when you graduate. Internships are one way to accomplish this.Because technology is constantly changing, those who work in the computer field must continuously keep their skills and knowledge up-to-date.

How Do We Accommodate Autism in the Workplace

How Do We Accommodate Autism in the WorkplaceAutism in the WorkplaceHow Do We Accommodate Autism in the WorkplaceAs the mother of a teenager on the autistic spectrum, I welches excited to watch the HBO movie about Temple Grandin last week. The movie was outstanding, and Clare Danes was phenomenal in the title role. Temple Grandin is probably the most famous autistic person today. She has a PhD and has written several books that have helped us understand so much more about how she and, by extension, other people with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) experience the world. In Temple Grandins case, her autism makes her uniquely suited to her line of work. She has innate understanding of animals, along with uncanny visual thinking skills, and has used them to make cattle ranches more humane. The movie was pretty realistic about how autism can make a person binnenseem very unpleasant in the workplace. Temple shouted at others when they couldnt see the logic of her arguments. With no sense o f diplomacy or persuasion, she (accurately) pointed out that they were too stupid to understand. Obviously, that behavior wont cut it in 99% of workplaces. When Brazen Careerist blogger Penelope Trunk began talking about her own Aspergers Syndrome (a high-functioning form of autism), a lot of her outlandish, unfiltered, seemingly inappropriate posts suddenly made a lot more senseand after all, she did warn us shed be brazen. What many people dont realize, unless theyre close to someone on the spectrum, is that people with ASDs play by different rules. Its not by choice they just arent wired to easily understand all the emotional, social, intangible things that most of us are able to pick up on automatically. And therefore a lot of people with ASDs arent as successful in the working world as Temple Grandin or Penelope Trunk. Imagine yourself attempting to do your job if you couldnt recognize facial expressions, body language, subtle hints, or sarcasm. And maybe you cant process spoke n language quickly, so by the time you decode the last string of sounds into words, youve missed some other important point. Then add to that a heightened sensitivity to hintergrund noise, sudden sounds, strange smells, flickering lights, physical irritants such as clothing labels the list goes on and on. With current statistics telling us as many as one in 100children may have some form of ASD, wed better come up with some innovative ideas for more autism-friendly work options, pronto. ASDs can be valuable assets in the right work setting, both in spite of and because of the persons unique traits. Many of the worlds great thinkerscomposers, engineers, scientists, inventors, mathematicians, and creative artistshave had autistic traits. As Temple Grandins mother put it, people with autism are different, not less. When we find better ways to accommodate differences and tap unique strengths, we bring greater diversity and some amazing, out-of-the-box thinking into the mix.
